Off Topic, Two Falcons

Again, I mean my website to combine professional and personal. Because that’s what we all do in real life.

This week for book I’m working on just one section on “discourse” about homelessness, inspired by the Austin camping ban. Memoir (Lars Eighner, Travels With Lizbeth, with dog, Austin-based). Film (Wendy and Lucy, with dog, but not in Austin). Film (Becoming Leslie, with thong, not dog, Austin, and yes I did meet him.)

And Boston, not Austin (no dog) memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City by Nick Flynn, re-meeting his father, after decades apart, as a client in the homeless shelter Pine Street Inn where Nick Flynn worked.

Of course John Oliver’s segment on homelessness featuring Austin’s (what the what) camping ban.

And because it is some kind of (if ugly) discourse, now need to include this awful distortion of San Francisco by someone named Michael (whoever, and whose full name, nor book title, I will not put on my website), nothing served but to reiterate blaming/shaming myths about homeless people (been around for decades) with not a single policy idea to help, zero none. Fortunately there are constructive people who see affordable housing (might add food and transportation and health care and child care) as purpose.

Meanwhile on this gorgeous sunny Saturday afternoon two hawks or falcons or whatever were flying, tandem, circling together, outside my window, seeming not to want to quit their play.

My little cat Oliver likes watching birds from inside but can’t have them. Tail twitching is allowed.

Now back on topic.
