That Joe Guy, And The Jimmy Guy, Still It’s All Connected

Years ago, Barack Obama (with whom I am glad to share a birthdate) decided to ignore a simple gaffe (something about “clean,” yeah gaffe) so that he and now-President Biden could share leadership.

The most recent State of the Union fit so well into my writing on the social conversation about economics. Reminded me that I’d left out presidential speeches from that section of that sub-section of that chapter of book. (It’s there now.) Whole lot of content in last week’s speech, lots of punditry to get through, most of it yes, about economics, me, surely not that expert, but now plugging my way through transcripts to getting it into credible online and print. Revision really is the biggest part of writing.

Then, meanwhile, after working with allied nations, and interrupting my writing plans, the President suddenly shows up at the Ukranian capital city. On a Monday morning. In February. With Ray-Bans.

I’m not listening that he’s “too” “old”.

He throws that crinkly grin to the way weird obstructionist fools and then the (less crazy, or maybe, oh no, more calculating) of them retreat. How about that.

And then he shoves off monster (plus just creepy) Putin. How about that.

It’s all connected. Joe Biden, and me too, we’re Amtrak folk. East Coast for him, Union Station Chicago, mostly, for me. Him, overnight train to Kyiv. That, I almost surely never will pull off.

And his honesty and decency just keep reminding me of my Father. All connected.

Jimmy Carter, another exceptionally, and yes, exceptionally, honest and decent man, again so like my Dad. President Carter seems to be facing final earthly days now, and I am really feeling sad. I so vividly remember watching him on my parents’ kitchen television screen, raising grasped hands with Sadat and Begin, and promising to myself to not, never, forget that. His post-Presidential legacy will be honored. And then, circle back again to my Father, who was a dedicated volunteer for and funder of Habitat For Humanity. Still connected.
